Jobs and Tertiary Education Indicator
The Jobs and Tertiary Education Indicator is an interactive tool which allows you to explore key facts about the fields of study, occupations, and industries of New Zealanders. The information is derived from the census. Jobs and Tertiary Education Indicator Tool [excel 8MB]
Why the Jobs and Tertiary Education Indicator was developed
The Department of Labour has developed the Jobs and Tertiary Education Indicator in consultation with the Tertiary Education Commission [external link] to provide the tertiary education sector with a common source of labour market information for planning and investment purposes.
What the Jobs and Tertiary Education Indicator shows
The Indicator uses employment, income, education and demographic data from the Census. Employment and education data has been coded to three different classification systems:
Education data is given as:
- Field of study, using the New Zealand Standard Classification of Education (NZSCED) at the narrow level
- Highest level of qualifications
Employment data is given as:
- Number employed in this occupation with this field of study
- Total number employed in this occupation
- Employment growth
- Mean and average income
- Top ten occupations (jobs), coded to the New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (NZSCO) at the unit (specific job) level.
- Top five industries (coded to individual industries using the Australian New Zealand Standard Industry Classification (ANZSIC) at a 3-digit level).
- Retirement rate – an estimate of the proportion of people who will retire from this occupation over the next twelve months
- Vacancy fill rate – an indication of how easily employers could fill vacancies. (Data is from the Department’s report on Occupations in Shortage, 2007).
Explore the data
When you open the Excel file, choose “Enable Macros” so that it will work for you.
The Indicator has three different ways you can explore the data. Each of these is a separate worksheet. When you open the Indicator, you will see the different tabs at the bottom of the workbook.
Explore by Field of Study
For each of the 70+ NZSCED fields of study, you can discover the top ten occupations for people whose highest qualification was in that field of study. You can also see, for each occupation:
- the proportion of people with each range of qualifications
- the top five industries employing people in that occupation
- demographic features, including age, gender, ethnicity,
The first three rows of data in each column are in light blue, and describe everyone in each occupation who also has the specific field of study. The rest of each column describes everyone in the occupation, regardless of what their field of study was.
Example
Field of Study = Automotive Engineering and Technology
- The green area shows the total number of people who have their highest qualification in Automotive Engineering and Technology.
- The striped area in the graphic below shows the total number of people employed in a related occupation (Motor Mechanics in this example.).
- The overlap area is all people who have their highest qualification in Automotive Engineering and Technology AND who work as Motor Mechanics.

The overlap shows that
- 19% of all people with their highest qualification in Automotive Engineering and Technology work as Motor Mechanics. This is row 7 on the Explore by Field of Study sheet: “% with highest qual in this FOS employed in each occupation”
- 47% (almost half) of all Motor Mechanics have their highest qualification in Automotive Engineering and Technology. This is row 8 in the Explore by Field of Study sheet:
“% employed in each occupation with highest qual in this FOS”
Explore by Industry
You can see the top ten occupations for any industry you select. The first two rows of data in each column describe everyone in that occupation who is also within the given industry. The rest of each column describes everyone in the occupation, regardless of their industry.
For each occupation you can also see:
- The top five fields of study for each occupation
- The highest level of qualifications
- The top five industries employing people for each occupation
- demographic features, including age, gender, ethnicity.
Explore by Occupation
You can compare information about an individual occupation (5-digit NZSCO) with information about the broader occupational group it belongs to (3-digit NZSCO).
Tips on viewing the data
You can re-size the window to get your desired view by holding down the Ctrl Key and using your mouse scroll to resize the window. You can also change the Zoom to increase or decrease the number of columns and rows you can see at any one time.
